Reconnecting Rhythms: Wisdom from the Moon

Blog/Reconnecting Rhythms: Wisdom from the Moon

Lately, I've been delving into deeper layers of meditation work, connecting with a diverse array of souls – the Earth; birds, plants, fungi, animals, even my own soul. But it was during a recent meditation when I connected with the soul of the Moon, as I gazed at her full, bright presence during the most recent eclipse in October 2023, that I received a profound message.

In the vision, the Moon appeared to as a Native American woman, adorned with a feather in her long silver hair, radiating wisdom and agelessness. Her weathered skin held stories and guidance as old as the universe. She introduced herself as “The Woman in the Moon.” Simply by her tone of voice, she appeared as the wisest elder I had ever known. Her words cut through time and space, urging me and humanity to consider the consequences of our choices for the seven generations that precede us and those that will follow.

This wisdom wasn't new to me, but she emphasized the urgency of our times. We're using the Earth's resources at an alarming rate, and the time to act consciously is running out.

I inhaled deeply, knowing in my bones, the truth of her words. My attention was directed to my womb, which seemed fitting as I had started my period that very day. She reminded me that women sometimes refer to their monthly cycles as "moon cycles." Her message was clear – we need to reconnect with the Moon cycle, the Earth’s cycle, and the cycles within our own bodies so we can re-connect with each other. Birth control is an obstacle to our cycles.

The message was encouraging us, as a society to let go of the unnatural medicines that disrupt our cycles and the invitation is to return to our inherent rhythms. After all, the Moon's influence on Earth is evident in the tides, and we, too, should attune ourselves to the natural ebbs and flows. As women, this reconnection with our wombs, can shape future generations. Children can grow up in harmony with the Earth's natural cycles, understanding the ebb and flow of tides and emotions, just as we are made to do.

I reflected on my own personal experience with birth control, a journey that began at the age of 15. I opted for the daily pill for about 7 years and then an IUD that was inserted into my uterus for another 5 years. This seemed “convenient,” eliminating the “annoyance” of periods and unpredictable moods. My doctors encouraged this, and so did my family and peers. I honestly didn’t think much of it. I only stopped using birth control when my beloved partner Jon pointed out several years ago, when I was 27, just how unnatural it was to NOT have a period. “You don’t have a period?” he asked me. “Why? How is that even possible? What is that doing to your body long term?” The crazy thing was, I never even questioned these things until he did. Jon’s questions made me become more curious about the long-term effects of this hormonal manipulation on my bodies and our environment as well. I mostly kept these questions to myself until now. And with the reminder of the urgency to become more in tune with the cycles, I feel it is time for me to share this with you as well.

After all, the menstrual cycle is a fundamental part of what makes a woman, providing fertile ground for new life. From my understanding, by in large, birth control tricks the body, making the body believe that she is pregnant, when she is not. It can also change who we are attracted to and who we are not. In my community, I've seen friends and acquaintances struggle with infertility at an alarming rate when she does want to become pregnant. Have you seen this? I've witnessed the devastating rise of cancer, could this be a post-cursor to the prolonged use of birth control? Are these connected? Have we researched these long term effects? What can we do?

These questions now lay heavy on my heart. I pondering whether discontinuing birth control might collectively help us listen to the ancient wisdom that echoes within me and each of us, no matter our gender or sex. By trusting our body's natural rhythms and turning to traditional methods like condoms when making love, we might rediscover the wisdom carried by the ebb and flow of our hormones, emotions and the Moon herself.

I have more questions than answers, and I do feel a responsibility to share this vision, which stirred something strong within me to see what it stirs for you.

Let's initiate a conversation, explore these thoughts, look at the quality of our research and listen to the messages that come through in meditations. Sit in meditation with yourself. Quiet your mind and open your heart. Then, perhaps you would like to connect with the Earth, the Moon and see the visions that present themselves to YOU. And, I would be honored to support those looking to transition away from these pharmaceutical medications, allowing our natural hormonal cycles to guide us, one Moon cycle at a time.
