Inspired by Adrienne Maree Brown’s book Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds, this framework uses nature, complex systems, and the idea that small, interconnected actions can lead to large-scale change. Here are some core principles:
Small, intentional actions can accumulate to create significant impact. Like fractals, where small patterns mirror larger ones, we can create big changes through consistent, focused efforts at smaller scales.
Adaptability is essential because change is inevitable. Being able to respond to shifting conditions and environments ensures resilience, just as organisms and ecosystems adapt to survive.
Urgency is often a distraction from meaningful work. When we slow down and focus on what’s truly important, we align with the right pace for our tasks and goals.
Our focus and energy help shape the world around us. By directing our attention to what matters most—such as relationships, creativity, and shared purpose—we foster growth in those areas.
Building trust within a community is vital to long-term, sustainable change. Moving too quickly can undermine trust, so the pace of action should match the strength of the relationships involved.
The power of being present allows us to adapt to circumstances in real-time. Over-planning can lead to rigidity, while being present enables us to respond with flexibility and creativity.
Our connections with each other create resilience. Just as ecosystems thrive through mutual support and balance, strong relationships help us navigate challenges and change.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution to complex problems. Instead, multiple approaches and perspectives must be explored, just as nature uses diversity to ensure survival.
Change is not always linear. It often unfolds in cycles, spirals, and iterations. Each cycle is an opportunity to reflect, adjust, and improve, as growth and transformation occur over time.
