Palo Santo wood has been burned by indigenous cultures for thousands of years for cleansing and clearing energies. This sacred tree is often found in Central and South America. (Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Bolivia). Palo Santo in Spanish means “holy stick.”
According to Third Eye Wood, there are two different kinds of Palo Santo species:
• Bursera Graveolens
• Bulnesia Sarmientio (endangered)
The practice of shamanism and many indigenous people believe that plants have spirits. (I fully believe this too!) Because of this, these trees should never be cut down. Once the trees have died, fallen over and have been on the ground for 4-10 years, they go through a metamorphosis. It is only by a natural death, followed by years on the forest floor that the essential oils and healing properties fully develop within the trees.
The challenge is Palo Santo has been over-harvested and the Bulnesia Sarmientoi species is endangered and the Bursera Graveolens species is “vulnerable.” In the West, Palo Santo is now being sold as a commercial commodity and the rituals have been often negated for personal benefit.
I must admit, I didn’t know Palo Santo was vulnerable when this picture was taken. I bought into the appropriation of this sacred ritual and didn’t even know it. I am learning all the time and wanted to share how much these trees are hurting because of our ignorance.
If you must buy Palo Santo, some companies do a great job harvesting ethically and sustainably. Please do some research first and find the Bursera Graveolens species! Sacred Wood Essence appears to be a sustainable option!
So, what if we really want to clear and call in protection for our spaces? Here are some plant smudging alternatives with less impact: Juniper, Lavender, Pine, Mugwort, European Sage, Rosemary, Mint and Dill.
